Isotope analyses of the lead and copper alloy objects from Gokstad

The specific goal of this project is to investigate the relationship between the Gokstad burial and the Skiringssal Kaupang, Norway's first urban settlement, which was situated some 15 km south of Gokstad.

Isotope analyses of the lead and copper alloy objects from Kaupang has demonstrated that raw metal was imported to Kaupang for the production of bronze and brass objects.

Can we establish a link?

If such objects in the Gokstad burial consist of raw materials from the same sources as used in Kaupang, this indicates the existence of a link between the to places. The sub-project is directed by post-doctoral fellow Unn Pedersen, Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History at the University of Oslo.
