Dendrochronological analyses of the Gokstad wood

This is one of the sub-projects that are focussing mainly on the provenance of the objects in the Gokstad burial.

By means of a non-destructive method, developed in the associated DendroCT project at the Museum of Cultural History, as many of the wooden objects as possible are being CT-scanned and dendrochronologically analysed, in order to establish where the wood in the object comes from and when it was felled.

X-ray scanning of objects

More than 70 objects of oak, including ship and boat planking, gaming board, carving boards, plates and candle holders, spades and other objects are being investigated by dendrochronologist, PhD Aoife Daly from dendro.dk in Copenhagen. The scanning of the objects is taking place in the micro-focus X-ray scanner at Norwegian Geotechnical Institute in Oslo.
