Sampling the cores from the Gokstad mound

After the conclusion of the coring campaign in October, Rebecca Cannell has been analysing the construction of the mound and pinpointed the cores and layers that have the largest potential to reveal information about its history and the Viking Age landscape surrounding it.

During 5th-7th December, Johan Linderholm from Umeå University and Richard Macphail from University College London has been sampling the selected cores for further analyses. So far the ambition is to do magnetic susceptibility, organic matter, phosphate, soil micromorphology, microchemistry, microstratigraphy, microfossils and macrofossils in order to answer questions about environment, land use, construction sequences and about the 10th century break-in into the mound. Results are expected May 2012.
