We advise that attendees purchase a 7-day ticket for public transport, which includes metro (T-bane), tram, bus, and boat. Check the journey planner on router.no. Travel details will also be provided by conference organizers.

4 June at 17:30: Welcome cocktail at the Historical Museum

On Tuesday 4 June, InART2024 is happy to invite all attendees and accompanying persons to the welcome reception with drinks and snacks starting at 17.30.

We will be at the Historical Museum, housed in a beautiful art nouveau building from 1902 in the city center. Attendees will also have the possibility to visit the VIKINGR exhibition during the reception. 

The museum is located at Frederiks gate 2 and can be reached by public transport. The closest public transportation stops are "Nationaltheatret" and "Tullinløkka".

5 June at 14.30: Guided tours

Several museums in Oslo have kindly agreed to support InART2024, offering guided tours of their facilities.

All visits are organized in the afternoon of Wednesday 5 June. Departure time will be approximately 14:30 from the conference venue, Georg Sverdrups Hus. 

All museums are easily accessible by public transport, which will be the mode of transport used unless otherwise specified.

Museums on the Bygdøy peninsula

The museums are approximately 35 minutes from the conference venue with public transport.

Norsk Folkemuseum

The museum can be reached by public transport. The closest stop is Folkemuseet.

Norsk Folkemuseum offers two tours.

First tour, Highlights of the museum:

  • Spots: 1 group of 25 people.
  • A guided tour in the open-air museum, where we take you to the Stave church, through the Norwegian Middle Ages and to the countryside of 1800s. We will see ways of living, craftmanship and culture.

Second tour, Timescape 1600–1914:

  • Spots: 1 group of 25 people.
  • A journey through time towards modern Norway. Meet merchants and public officials who constituted the Norwegian elite. Trade, travel and family relations laid the foundation for international networks and cultural exchange. This world-wide interchange contributed to shape daily life and culture in Norway.

Norwegian Maritime Museum

The Norwegian Maritime Museum can be reached by public transport. The closest stop is Bygdøynes.

Spots: 2 groups of 25 people each.

The Norwegian Maritime Museum was founded in 1914 and focuses on maritime cultural history. This includes boatbuilding and maritime archaeology, as well as exhibitions on seafaring, maritime art, and coastal culture.

The tour of the museum visits highlights, for instance the ongoing reconstruction of a Viking-age boat find.

Museums in Oslo centre

The museums are approximately 20-30 min from the conference venue.

National Museum - 3rd April: This tour is now fully booked

The museum can be reached by public transport. The closest stops are Aker Brygge, Dokkveien, and Nationaltheatret.

Spots: 2 groups of 15 people each.

The National Museum (Nasjonalmuseet) holds Norway's largest collection of art, architecture, and design. The new National Museum opened to the public June 2022.

We invite you to a 30 minute tour of the conservation facilities in our museum.

Munch Museum - 25th March: This tour is now fully booked.

The Museum can be reached by public transport. The closest stops are Bjørvika and Jernbanetorget.

Spots: 1 group of 20 people.

The visit will take you behind-the-scenes, where participants visit the scientific laboratory and conservation studios.

It represents a unique opportunity for the conference participants to gain insight into the important work that paintings and paper conservators and conservation scientists do to preserve and study the collection.

Art objects involved in exciting research and conservation projects can be seen and appreciated under the expert eyes of the professionals working in this area.

Natural History Museum, University of Oslo

The museum is in the Botanical Gardens and can be reached by public transport. The closest stops are Lakkegata skole, Sars' gate, and Tøyen T-bane.

The Natural History Museum offers two tours:

1. The amazing world of minerals and fossils, with Professor Jørn Hurum

Spots: 1 group, 20 people.

The Natural History Museum houses world-class collections of minerals, gems, and fossils. In a protected building with a flair of the 1920s, the new exhibits, opened in 2022, was voted “Museum of the Year 2023”, an award given by the Norwegian Museum Association in recognition of its high quality and innovative activities. The tour will focus on the aesthetics of colorful minerals and the beauty of organisms millions of years old.

2. Historical natural dyes: Historical textiles were often dyed with plants, with Associated Professor Anneleen Kool  - 3rd April: This tour is now fully booked

Spots: 1 group of 20 people.

Associated Professor Anneleen Kool, whose research revolves around plants and their uses, will take you on a tour through the University of Oslo´s botanical garden for a closer look at dye plants as well as other plants that have been used in Scandinavia since the Viking Age.

University of Oslo’s original campus

The Campus can be reached by public transport. The closest stop is Nationaltheatret.

Spots: 1 group of 30 people.

The University campus in the heart of Oslo represents one of the major works of Norwegian neoclassisism. Completed in 1852, the buildings were designed by local architect Christian H. Grosch and Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

The campus illustrates how Greek Revival met contemporary technologies, materials and building techniques. During the guided tour we will visit some of the interiors - with a focus on recent restoration and rehabilitation activities.

Museums outside of Oslo centre

The Museums are approximately 35 minutes from the conference venue.

Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology

The Museum can be reached by public transport. The closest stop is Kjelsås stasjon.

Spots: 1 group of 25 people.

Come to Teknisk Museum for a look behind the scenes – a visit to the conservation lab, workshop, and storage facilities for scientific objects, from the very big to the very small!

Join a guided tour in the medical exhibition “Life and Death – The human body in transition”, with some in depth details of scientific research and conservation on a couple of key objects.

The tour also includes a stop by Norway’s oldest electron microscope, whilst some free time will be given for visitors to take a glimpse of other parts of our exhibitions displaying old instruments relevant to the science of physics, as well as our exhibition on the technological challenges against climate crisis, but also how information and communication uses AI to guide visitors through interesting objects.

*Please note that the medical exhibition contains human remains.

Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo

The museum can be reached by public transport. The closest stops are Økern, Risløkka, Kabelgata and Ulven torg.

Spots: 2 groups of 15 people.

The museum’s site at Økern holds the conservation and scientific laboratories, photographic studios, and object storage rooms.

Collection managers will lead you through archaeological and ethnographic storage, which houses objects as diverse as stave church portals, Medieval polychrome sculptures, archaeological textiles and iron weapons, arctic clothing, and Sri Lankan musical instruments.

6 June at 17:30: Social dinner

InART2024’s social dinner will be organized on Thursday 6 June at Frognerseteren (frognerseteren.no). Frognerseteren is a historical site dating back to 1891. It is located 469 meters above sea level and offers a beautiful view of the Oslo fjord.

Joint departure from the conference venue at Georg Sverdrups Hus at 17:30.

Those who prefer to arrive at the restaurant by themselves are kindly requested to be at Frognerseteren at 18:30. 

A traditional three-course menu will be served, after welcome drinks. Menu details will be given as we get closer to the event. The restaurant can accommodate 180 guests, make sure to save your seat when registering for the conference. 

Please note that the dinner costs 600 NOK and must be paid for separately when you register.

The restaurant is located at the final stop of T-bane (Metro) Line 1, direction Frognerseteren. The resturant is a 100 meter walk from the metro station, we recommend that you wear comfortable shoes.
