Heritage Accessibility Debate

Welcome to a debate on the strategy of protection, digitization, rescue research and popularization of artefacts and archaeological sites with experts and hobby archaeologists from Ukraine, Poland and Norway.

The topics for the debate will be issues related to the availability of data on archaeological sites, the activities of hobby archaeologists and their consequences, digitization of archaeological heritage and rescue research of archaeological sites.

The debate will be attended by researchers, museologists, conservators, as well as hobby archaeologists. The exchange of views on the effectiveness of heritage protection policy in Poland, Norway and Ukraine will be particularly important.

The debate is organized and moderated by the Polska Debatuje Foundation and will be a hybrid meeting with participants located in both Ukraine, Poland and Norway. It can be followed online on Zoom or a Facebook streaming. Audience in Oslo are welcome to attend physically at the Lecture Hall at the Historical Museum.

After the debate, there will be a summary publication, which will include the opinions of the invited guests. During the debate we will provide translation into Polish or English. The event will be recorded and then published in the form of a podcast, which will be made available to a wide audience.

The following experts will take part in the debate

Bartłomiej Bartecki

A graduate of archaeological studies at the Maria Curie–Skłodowska University in Lublin. From 2012 to the present, director of the Museum of Fr. Stanisław Staszic in Hrubieszów. Initiator and founder of Masłomęckie Association "Wioska Gotów", dealing with the popularization of the archaeological heritage of the Hrubieszów region. Co–author of the project for the construction of an archaeological open-air museum and the Center for Archaeological and Cultural Heritage – Historiae Gothorum Laboratory in the Gotów Village in Masłomęcz. Organizer of outdoor events and coordinator of many projects, publications and exhibitions in the field of popularizing archeology. Promoter of cooperation between the scientific community and detectorist groups and with accidental discoverers.

Valeriia Korniienko

Representative of the city authorities of Włodzimierz Wołyński, Ukraine. Responsible, among others, for the implementation of an international cross-border project on the protection and popularization of archaeological heritage entitled "The Goth’s Path: A Joint Historical Journey into the Past".

Steinar Kristensen

Archaeologist graduated at University of Oslo. He has a broad excavation experience. In the latter years with particular focus on digital documentation in various format from field to archive. Later activities includes an infrastructure project for digital documentation from archaeological excavation throughout Norway. He is involved in several research project as GIS-manager and engaged in citizens science and outreach at the Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo in Norway.

Łukasz Miechowicz,

PhD – archaeologist, employee of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. A graduate of the Institute of Archeology of the University of Warsaw. He deals with the archeology of the Middle Ages and the modern period, methodology of archaeological research and documentation of artefacts, especially the so-called new technologies. Head of the archaeological mission in Chodlik IAE PAN. Outside Poland, he participates in research projects in the Middle East and Greece. In 2023, he became the social guardian of archaeological sites and artefacts in the Opole (Lublin region) district.

Radosław Nowek

Represents the Historical Association "Pasja". Regionalist, history enthusiast, amateur seeker since 1986. He cooperates with many organizations dealing with the cultural heritage of the western part of the Lublin region: museums, memory chambers, archaeologists, city and commune authorities. A water industry engineer by profession. Currently, he works as the director of the municipal management plant in Stąporków.

Marte Spangen

PhD – Associate Professor of Archaeology at the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo. Spangen is specialized in Saami archaeology and previously worked as Associate Professor of Archaeology at UiT – the Arctic University of Norway. Before earning her PhD at Stockholm University, she gained a broad experience working with cultural heritage management and various kinds of (museum) dissemination in different parts of Norway. In 2018-2019, she initiated and produced Norway's first archaeology podcast. In her current position, she will have a particular focus on metal detecting finds and cooperation with detectorists. She is also part of the working group articulating a citizen science program at MCH. Spangen is currently on the board of the Medieval Europe Research Community (MERC).

Agnieszka Stachyra

Graduate of archeology at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University. Since 2000, she has been professionally involved in archaeological conservation and protection of cultural heritage. In the years 2008-2019 she worked as a specialist for archaeological research and heritage at risk in the construction of roads in the Lublin Branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. From 2020, she heads the Department of Archaeology at the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments in Lublin. She deals with issues of archaeological conservation in the legal and methodological scope, e.g. related to the record of archaeological sites and their protection against destruction, issuing permits for archaeological research and the search for sites and controlling the correctness of their conduct, transferring movable archaeological artefacts to museums, and popularizing the protection of cultural heritage.

Moderator: Gabriela Manista

Lawyer and PhD candidate at the University of Warsaw, postgraduate at Sorbonne University. Currently working at the Digital Humanities Center, Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences as a researcher and Open Science Officer. Her academic work focuses on digital heritage. In the years 2019–2022 she was on the Board of the Polish Debating Foundation, conducting several projects with museums and cultural institutions in Poland.

Secondary Moderator: Konrad Kiljan

Communication researcher at the Media Anthropology Department at University of Warsaw and New Ethos Lab at Warsaw University of Technology. Konrad analyzes persuasive mechanisms in political and business communication combining rhetorical theory with computational methods, including AI-assisted natural language processing techniques. He is the former Executive Director of Polish Debating Foundation, leader of educational projects with International Debate Education Association.

About the project "Heritage Accessible"

This project is an interdisciplinary partnership of the National Museum in Lublin and the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo. It has professionalization of cultural workers and dissemination of cultural heritage in focus, and is implemented thanks to co-financing from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway under the EEA grants.

The project undertakes various tasks at the level of interdisciplinary management of cultural heritage, including the exchange of knowledge on the 3D digitization of artefacts of material culture and the use of this documentation for the protection, conservation and promotion of cultural heritage.

Opinion-forming discussions on issues of the importance of cultural heritage and the need to protect it, conducted in the form of conferences, workshops and debates, are important activities in the project "Heritage Accessible".
