Description: Patu onewa or short-handled club from Hokianga, Aotearoa New Zealand. Dated to the Classical Māori period (Te Puawiatanga, 1500-1800). These hand clubs - made from either basalt, wood, whale bone or nephrite - were considered to be a symbol of high status and important heritage objects. Patu onewa features a flat elongated blade with a sharp, rounded striking edge. It is considered to be a favourite weapon amongst the Māori. The weapon was commonly traded between Māori and the earliest European sailors. The club measures approximate 40 cm and weighs around 2-3 kg.
