The reference collection consists of about 16,000 artefacts and aims to show lithic technology as a production process. It contains experimentally produced and copied lithic artefacts, corresponding to artefact material found at Stone Age sites in Norway.

The collection can be used as reference material for research, cultural heritage management and excavations, and for educational purposes.

About the reference collection
The reference collection contains the common production methods and techniques used during the Norwegian Stone Age, examples from all stages of production, , different tool types as well as an extensive collection of lithic raw materials from Scandinavia. The collection also includes examples of tools used in the production of lithic artefacts, skill levels, and specially designed courses in lithic technology and basic terminology.
The reference collection comprise experiments carried out by several flint knappers. Archaeologist Dr. Lotte Eigeland has produced a large portion of the reproductions and experiments in the collection, while archaeologist Morten Kutschera has produced several tailored experiments for the collection. In addition, several archaeologists have donated experiments and raw material samples. Dr. Lotte Eigeland has systematized the collection.
