Tullinløkka with the Historical Museum and the National Gallery

Tullinløkka

With the new Domus Juridica, Tullinløkka has become an urban space with great potential for the Museum of Cultural History and the University of Oslo. As far as possible, the goal for the next ten years of the Museum of Cultural History is that the square will be developed as a green recreational area that leads into the museum buildings. The museums must be visible and inviting as museum premises for the users of the square. The urban space will be used as an exhibition area.

To ensure goal achievement, the Museum of Cultural History must work to ensure that the development of Tullinløkka is incorporated into UiO's plans for area development. The museum will also follow up the dialogue with the Norwegian Directorate of Public Construction and Property and Oslo Municipality on further development of the area, through the university's established channels.

The Historical Museum

The ambitions for the historical museum are structured in two five-year horizons. For the first five years, an important strategic goal for the Museum of Cultural History is that plans for internal rehabilitation of the museum building are incorporated in UiO's master plan for real estate, starting in 2025-2026. The rehabilitation plans must include a comprehensive plan for the conversion of the basement areas into public areas and the establishment of an entrance to the museum building directly from Tullinløkka.

In the period 2020-2023, the work of renewing the exhibitions in the historical museum will continue. The conditions for this are generally given in the museum's Strategy 2030. In addition, consideration for building monumental and partly spectacular architecture will be an integral part of new exhibition projects. Detailed plans must be available in a comprehensive exhibition programme that takes the architecture, the audience experience and the overall impression of the museum visit into consideration.

Throughout the strategy period, it will be a goal to increase the proportion of public space in the building and reduce the use of the building as office space. The museum's goal is to move the archive and library functions from the Historical Museum to more suitable premises.

The National Gallery

As the fourth wall in Tullinløkka's urban space, the National Gallery is an important building for the Museum of Cultural History and the university. The Museum of Cultural History wants to use the building as an exhibition space where the museum invites partners to both long-term collaboration and event-oriented projects. The aim is to create a different cultural-historical experience than what the Historical Museum is to offer, where unfamiliar and forgotten aspects of the national narrative are given cultural-historical interpretation.

During the rehabilitation of the historical museum in the second half of the 2020s, the National Gallery can function as the exhibition space of the Museum of Cultural History in the city centre.
