Background

Jon Røyne Kyllingstad is a historian and works with the history of science and academic institutions in the period from about 1870 to 2000. For many years he has been particularly concerned with ideas about race, ethnicity and nation within biological disciplines such as physical anthropology and genetics, as well as in archeology and history and other humanities. Prior to joining the Museum of University and Science History in 2017, he worked for 6 years as a senior curator at the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology.

From 2013 to 2018, he initiated and led the project From racial typology to DNA sequencing - 'Race' and 'ethnicity' and the science of human genetic variation 1945-2012, funded by the Norwegian research council. As part of this, he led, in tandem with senior curator Ageliki Lefkaditou, the exhibition-project FOLK: From racial types to DNA sequences, at the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology.

Kyllingstad was previously affiliated with the Forum for University History at UiO and contributed to the writing of a multi-link work on the history of Oslo University. Here he addressed the development of disciplines such as oceanography, meteorology, biology, historiography, archeology, linguistics, ethnography, folklore, biology, medicine and physical anthropology in Norway.

His postdoc project Nationalist internationalism looked at how the national and international political situation during and after the First World War affected the development of historical research as well as notions of national identity in Norway and Denmark. The project was related to Kyllingstad's doctoral thesis (2008), which dealt with the Institute for Comparative Cultural Research and the development and international relations of the humanities in Norway following World War I.

Kyllingstad was a member of the so-called Skeleton Committee - The National Committee for the Assessment of Research on Human Remains, from the committees establishment in 2008 and until 2016.

The exhibition “Inside the box? Over 100 years of measuring intelligence” shows a selection of psychometric tests. Such tests have been used as a diagnostic tool in the healthcare system, in forensic psychiatric assessments, in medical and psychological research as well as in the military, and the education system. Their long history connects them to debates over the role of heredity and environment, the politics of segregation and integration, and policies related to sorting and accommodation. The exhibition is based on the research project “Historicizing intelligence” which explores the long history of IQ-testing and “intelligence” in Norway. But neither the research project, nor the exhibition would have been possible without historical sources. Such historical sources - the historical heritage of universities - are often in a state of continuous crisis. Universities seldom prioritize material heritage and its preservation is often a matter of an emergency operation. Using this exhibition and the process of making it as starting point, this session will discuss how university material heritage is not only an indispensable resource for research, but also an important moment for institutions and disciplinary communities to reflect on their history, practices and social role. The session includes a guided tour of the exhibition and an open discussion with the curators and researchers.

Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) er den vanligste IQ-testen for barn i verden. De er standardverktøy både i det norske helsevesenet og skolens PP-tjeneste for utredning av barn med spesielle behov og for diagnostisering av psykisk utviklingshemming. Innlegger presenterer noen tanker og funn fra en studie av oversettelsen og tilpasningen av norske versjoner av denne testen fra 1978 til 2009, med særlig fokus på begrepene om «kultur», «befolkning» og «representabilitet» som ligger til grunn for denne prosessen.

The Wechsler tests are the internationally dominating IQ-tests. They are generally regarded as scientific tools that measure universal, culture-independent aspects of the human mind. This claim rest partly on cross-national comparison of test results from culturally and linguistically different populations. The translation, adaptation, and use of the same tests in nations worldwide is therefore an important element in the development of the tests and in establishing and validating the universality of the constructs that the tests measure. This talk presents findings from a historical study of the translation and adaptation of shifting Norwegian versions of the WISC tests (WISC-R, WISC III, WISC IV, AND WISC V). It aims to explore the explicit and implicit methodological and theoretical premises upon which these processes have been based, focusing in particular on the concepts of culture, representativeness, ethnicity, and class that are at play.

I Norge i mellomkrigstida ble mye offentlig støtte til fag som arkeologi, historie, folkloristikk, språkvitenskap og antropologisk raseforskning kanalisert gjennom Institutt for sammenlignende kulturforskning. Instituttet ble opprettet like etter første verdenskrig og var delvis legitimert i fredstanken. Instituttet skulle være en internasjonal møteplass for kulturforskere. Gjennom flerfaglig nasjonsoverskridende kultursammenligning skulle det skapes innsikt i det universelle menneskelige fenomenet kultur, og motarbeide de humanistiske fagenes nasjonale slagside. Instituttet for sammenlignende kulturforskning var også bygget på en idé om programstyrt flerfaglig forskning. For å realisere denne ideen var Instituttet utstyrt med en relativt stor offentlig bevilgning. Slik fikk Instituttet betydning for formingen av mellomkrigstidas humanistiske vitenskaper, særlig viktig ble instituttet for utviklingen innenfor deler av historiefaget, arkeologien, folkloristikken/etnologien og for den samiske kulturforskningen. Avhandlingen belyser hvordan Instituttideen oppstod, hvorfor den høstet tverrpolitisk støtte fra noen av periodens mest profilerte politikere og fra et nesten samstemt humanistisk fagmiljø, og i hvilken grad, og på hvilken måte Instituttets agenda ble satt ut i livet. Avhandlingen viser at Instituttet ikke bare kan sees på som et forsøk på å realisere visse bærende ideer, men i like stor grad var et framforhandlet aggregat av ulike norske og internasjonale vitenskapelige, politiske og kulturelle agendaer og prosjekter. Ved å granske instituttets tilknytning til ulike kontekster, belyses en rekke ideer om nasjon, norskhet, internasjonalisme, fredsbygging, vitenskap, kulturforskning, kultur, rase og, ikke minst, evolusjon, som sirkulerte i samtidas vitenskapelige og offentlige ordskifter og dannet premisser for den politiske prosessen bak instituttopprettelsen, for den vitenskapelige virksomheten ved Instituttet, og for forståelsen av de humanistiske fagenes samfunnsrolle.
